Quick. What’s your favorite dramatic TV show? Mine is (was!) Breaking Bad. I don’t get cable so I had to make do with watching on Netflix a year after the initial showing, but man, was that an awesome show. Amazing writers behind that series. My kids still can’t understand how I, their mom, could be interested in a show about meth dealers. Well, it’s not so much the subject as the characters and the emotions involved.
I love the series so much I, of course, couldn’t help but let my mind wander. What if vampires were thrown into the mix? In my world of Beautiful Creatures I already have a drug that is powerfully addictive to vampires—faery dust. I’ve stated that faery dust to vampires is like meth to humans, instantly addictive. So why not toss a little Breaking Bad wrench into one of my stories and see what happens?
In The Vampire Hunter I wanted to add in that danger of creating an addictive drug and also show the side of those trying to fight it (the vampire hunters). I had fun with this story. Drugs are serious. But when mixed into a fantasy world and tossed about with a lot of romance and a generous helping of emotion and placed in the Parisian landscape, I think I managed to create a fun, adventurous and interesting story.
This is the second story in my In The Company of Vampires series. The series follows vampire slayers who are knights in the Order of the Stake. Here’s a little info about the Order:
The Order of the Stake was established in Paris, circa 1585, by Charles Maximilian Valois. Mortal men are recruited, trained, and knighted into the secretive Order by the King. It is rumored King is an actual king, but not even the Knights know if it is truth. Another rumor claims the founder of the Order may actually be a vampire. Rook, a man of dubious nature, assists and controls all access to King, training, and communications.
After a vigorous 6-month training program, Knights take their vows—Live to Serve. Serve Until Death. Die Fighting.—to the Order, are outfitted with special gear, and become shadows that stalk vampires worldwide. They are charged to slay only when provoked or to protect innocents. Befriending, or even falling in love, with a vampire is a crime against the Order, punishable by banishment, and possibly death.
