My Indigo Inspiration

by Jordan Dane, author of Crystal Fire (Harlequin TEEN)

The inspiration for Indigo Awakening (Book #1) and Crystal Fire (Book #2 – New Release), my two-book Hunted series with Harlequin Teen, came from researching Indigo children. Query “Indigo Child” on the Internet and you’ll get over 8 million hits. For the purposes of fiction, I took liberties in my portrayal, but Indigo kids are generally described as highly intelligent, gifted teen psychics with a bright ‘indigo’ aura and a mission to save the world. They have high IQs, see angels and commune with the dead. Are Indigo children real or are they manipulated by adults to believe they’re special? Are they dysfunctional misfits or mankind’s evolutionary savior? You decide, but I find the notion of man’s evolution intriguing.

At my Hunted series signings and face-to-face discussions with readers, I’ve had several parents (or teens) who shared their belief that Indigos exist. Parents or siblings either know someone in their family or are teens who wonder if they are Indigo themselves. I met an Indigo teen last year, after Indigo Awakening released. She’s remarkable. I knew there was something special about her, but I didn’t press her for a reveal. She eventually shared her experiences with the dead and her psychic abilities. Being in her presence, I felt as if I were looking into the eyes of someone much older. I’m proud to call her a friend.

IndigoAwakening_wofonts (2) In my series and the world I built, there is a hierarchy between Indigos and Crystal teens. I made Indigo kids the base level with the status of a Crystal child more unique, powerful, and elite. Indigos have a warrior nature, a fierce fighting spirit and are rebellious, but Crystal children can be more peace loving and innocent. If the next evolution is walking among us now, what kind of world will they build?

There is a dark side to having such psychic powers—a duty and responsibility—and when the Believers (the secret organization bent on their annihilation) tamper with science and human nature in book #2, they battle something they should have respected more. In Crystal Fire, there are consequences on both sides when power (of any kind) becomes abusive.

1.)  If you could have a secret Indigo power, what would that be?

2.) Have you ever experienced a psychic moment or do you know anyone who you think is a real psychic?
