I’ve been asked where I got the idea to write about zombie werewolves in Claimed By the Alpha, my first release with Nocturne Cravings. It sounds like one of those horror movies you’d see on Monster TV or something. Zombie Werewolves and the Commander of the Mango Jungle. While my love of pop culture horror may have influenced me just a bit, it actually hatched into existence when I was researching for another book. I was clicking from link to link when I stumbled across some articles about Kuru—a form of spongiform encephalopathy that’s found in tribes who practice cannibalism.
I started thinking about werewolves and infection and all the biting. Then I wondered what would happen if a werewolf bit someone who had it? Or transmuted some other form of the disease?
Of course someone would try to weaponize it. And the story exploded from there into secret government conspiracies, experiments, the lone cop on the trail of her murdered partner and a hero who can only be stronger than the beasts he hunts is if he’s one of them.
Werewolves are one of my favorite supes to write about because they embody the best and worst of humanity. What’s more terrifying than something with the instincts of a carnivorous predator, but with the cognition of a human? Something that can think and reason like we do, but are still fueled by baser urges? I think their battles to control their darker natures reflect our own because real monsters don’t have fangs and fur. They’re people. Just like us.
What’s your favorite supernatural type to read about?
