When shooting the cover for Siren’s Secret we dove in with excitement because it was our first mermaid story in a couple of years. Check out our original ideas and inspiration for the cover and some exclusive shots from the photo shoot! Look for Siren’s Secret by Debbie Herbert this November.
The Harlequin Nocturne Art Director, sketched the original concept until the possibility of going underwater was proposed. The Harlequin Nocturne team jumped at the chance to create this unique cover.
The original idea focused on the hero in a boat while the mermaid perched herself up on the side, in a swampy pond.
As the creation of the cover developed, the original idea evolved into so much more.
We booked a local swimming pool for the afternoon to host the underwater shoot. The model, wearing her mermaid costume, gets into the water – it was freezing! The rest of the team stood watching from the sweltering deck.
The most interesting part of the cover shoot was the photographer and his assistant under the water with the model. The photographer used sandbags to keep himself from floating to the top while shooting.
You could imagine the number of makeup touchups needed throughout the course of the shoot. The makeup artist worked wonders!
The art team reviews a couple test shoots. Happy with what they see, the photo shoot continues.
And the final cover. What a beautiful image!
