The Shivers All Over… Harlequin Shivers Call for Gothic Submissions

By Denise Zaza, Senior Editor, Harlequin Books

This has been a long time coming.  The concept for the new Harlequin E Shivers series has been something that I have wanted to see come to life for several years.  But the traditional publishing venue here at Harlequin did not support its creation.  Our series readership returns to our category of romance lines for a promised experience.  Whether it is for gripping suspense, sensual romance, new paranormal worlds or heartwarming family stories, we as editors have to deliver to our loyal reader expectations.  And while gothic overtones make cameo appearances in many of our lines, we haven’t had a dedicated series for this oh so appealing genre.  Until now.   The digital space opens up a whole new world for our editorial offerings.  With Shivers we wanted to update the traditional pulp gothic.  Keep the moody, atmospheric text that legions of readers have loved since forever and contemporize the stories.  Rich, with highly sensual romance, these books are packed with titillating detail.  Suitably dark and dangerous heroes roam the night beguiling sensible heroines beyond all reason with all-male magnetism.  Sumptuous and scary, these chilling stories elicit the best kind of Shivers.

In DARKENING AROUND ME, the first Shivers eBook available (coming soon!), Barbara Hancock perfectly captures the allure of sensual pleasure amid the frightening presence of a threatening ghost.  The reader will feel every sensation and see the visual landscape through the new gothic prism with her imaginative writing.

Whether contemporary or historical, every one of the Shivers stories deliver a lush, decadent reading experience that is pure escape.

I know I’m not the only one who thinks this will have great appeal with readers.  But let us know what you think.  Better yet, let us know what kinds of stories and settings you would like to see.  We want to deliver the ultimate romantic fantasy with this new line.

To further this end we are actively acquiring and putting the call out for your great gothic story.  You can find details here: http://harlequin.com/callforshivers.  You can submit to us for this promotion from now until August 2, and we promise a response with feedback by September 6.  We want to be scared…and seduced.

  1. Sounds great!!

  2. This sounds very enticing! I adore the Nocturne line, but I’m sick to death of shifters, vampires, and werewolves. It’s like the genre is trying to take from the popularity of Twilight, and I’m just so over it. I mean no disrespect to the authors or the publisher, it’s just overdone, in my opinion. Granted I loved Leonard’s ‘Shifter’s Destiny.’ The unicorn theme was a nice change of pace from the usual array of shifters, and it was just a damn good story.

Keep us updated on Shivers. I will definitely be checking it out!

Oh, and I would love to see an adult steampunk romance series. :)

  3. Morgaine Swann

Hi! – I’ve been writing Sookie Stackhouse/SVM/True Blood fan fiction for about 5 years and I have a pretty solid following. I’ve got a manuscript of an original story I want to submit. Do you know if they want the whole query letter, synopsis, mss in a particular format? The link they provided doesn’t give this detail, but it did say incomplete submissions will be deleted. Help? Thanks!

Thank you so much! I’ve been craving this desperately!
