Hero Interview: Author Bonnie Vanak Chats with the Hero of “The Covert Wolf”

The Covert Wolf is Bonnie Vanak’s newest Nocturne, and the first book in the Phoenix Force series, featuring Navy SEALS with paranormal powers. To get insight into Lt. Matthew Parker, the werewolf hero of The Covert Wolf, Bonnie decided to interview him.

Bonnie:  “Being a Navy SEAL requires discipline, intelligence, great physical strength and courage. You spend a lot of time scuba diving in water, too. How does being a werewolf interfere with this task? Do you dog paddle a lot?”

Matt:  “Very funny. They should put you on Jimmy Kimmel, let the both of you sling one-liners at each other. I’m a Navy diver and I wear combat diving gear, just like the other guys. I don’t shift into a wolf when I dive.”

Bonnie:  “Probably because they don’t make rebreathers that would fit your muzzle… let’s move on. What’s it like being a Navy SEAL and apart from your pack? Don’t you miss your family?”

Matt:  “Getting a little personal, aren’t we? My team is my family. We’re tight. I’d die for them and they’d die for me.”

Bonnie:  “How did you enjoy the ‘book tour’ you took on my Facebook page?

Matt:  “When you hauled me to West Virginia and everywhere you went, from the museums to the bars? Putting me on the Climax was pretty harrowing… I was sure the train would take off and I’d get run over by a 55-ton antique locomotive.”

Bonnie:  “You always did say you enjoyed riding a climax… never mind. Tell me what you like most about Sienna?”

 Matt:  “Ah, this is a PG-rated blog…”

Bonnie:   “Ok, what you admire most about Sienna?”

Matt:   “She’s a tough little Fae, and she doesn’t hesitate to go after what she wants. But deep inside she’s sweet and soft and vulnerable, and when I see her, I just want to hold her close, nuzzle that sweet spot beneath her ear and then when she makes that little breathy sigh, I want to….”

Bonnie:  “Ok, this is a PG-rated blog. As a Navy SEAL who’s a werewolf, how do your special pararnormal powers give you an edge?”

Matt:  “Being a wolf comes in handy when trying to flush out the enemy. With my heightened sense of smell, I can pick up a scent trail that other SEALS can’t find.”

Bonnie:  “All the guys on your team have a nickname. Is yours Rover? Or Fluffy?”

Matt:  “Ha ha. My nickname is Dakota after the John Wayne movie.”

Bonnie:  “There’s a few others who help you and Sienna try to track down the missing Orb before fire demons use it to destroy the world. Stephen, the New Orleans vampire, is a friend you’ve worked with him before. Then there’s Chief Petty Officer Sam Shaymore. How do you get along with Petty Officer Shaymore? You lecture him at the beginning of the book. Seems like a little hostility there.”

Matt:  “Shay is a good operator and a friend, but he’s a player. It gets him into trouble sometimes. He could have endangered Sienna by forgetting something that is SOP for the Phoenix Force when we’re on an op. And speaking of Shay, shouldn’t you get back to writing The Phantom Wolf, the next Phoenix Force book? That’s his story. You need to get to the scene where he first makes love because man, he is getting really impatient. Last night he told me, ‘Is Bonnie EVER going to let me have sex?’”

Bonnie:  “You heroes…Sex is ALL you think about. Let’s talk action and danger. What’s the scariest thing about the fire demons in The Covert Wolf?”

Matt:  “The depth of their evil. They’ll hesitate at nothing to go forward with their plans for power and domination. They thrive on destruction and the pain of others and they enjoy watching someone suffer. I swore upon my buddy’s death in Afghanistan that I’d never let them win. If it takes my last breath, I’ll die fighting them to keep innocent civilians safe.”

Bonnie:  “You a true hero, Matt. And because this is your book, how would you like to read a passage from your favorite part of The Covert Wolf?”

Matt:  Clears throat and begins to read from The Covert Wolf. “Sex with Matt meant more than surrendering to his sexual dominance. It meant forging a physical link between them, tying her physically to this strong, courageous wolf. Making love would be intimate and emotional, digging past all her defenses she’d erected ever since leaving the colony.

As if he knew, Matt slowed and stopped. He cupped her cheek tenderly. The look shattered her. He gazed at her as if she were the most precious thing on earth. As if nothing else mattered, not his being a SEAL, nor a wolf. Only her. The sheer tender longing crumbled her resolve. No Fae had ever made her feel like this, had wanted her this badly.

He was a covert wolf, who risked his own life to protect others. All her life, she’d lived a covert life as a Fae, secluding herself from the world. Suddenly she wanted to throw herself headfirst into all he offered in the promise of his soft, seductive smile. Sienna shook with her own longing.

“Make love to me, Matt,” she whispered. “Make me yours tonight. I don’t care about anything else right now.”

They were only a man and a woman, with this burning need between them.

He took her into the bedroom, snapped on a light. Matt tugged the shirt over his head and shed his boots and pants. Breath caught in her throat.

“Um, wow. You were right. Commando,” she managed to say…”

Bonnie:  “Ok, that’s all for now, this IS a PG-rated blog! Thanks Matt, for taking time to be with readers on Harlequin’s Paranormal Romance blog! You can get a copy of The Covert Wolf at bookstores, or online at Harlequin, The Book Depository, Amazon, Barnes and Noble!”
