Hi, Everyone -

Thanks for letting hang out with you and blog about my latest Nocturne, THE PROTECTOR. It’s the fourth book in the Time Raider series that the fabulous Lindsay McKenna and I developed over a couple of glasses of wine at a Booklovers conference a few years ago.

Since Lindsay and I are both veterans, we liked the idea of a series featuring kick-ass military women who go back in time and hook up with a famous female from the past who helps them search for pieces of a medallion that could save Earth from domination. When we got home, we broached the idea to RomVets. This is a group of former and current military women who are also romance writers. (Check out our website at www.romvets.com) The RomVets loved the basic concept and jumped in with all kinds of plot twists and turns. We then took the idea to Tara Gavin, senior editor of Nocturne. She loved it, too, and bought the first four books to be written by Lindsay, Cindy Dees, PC Cast, and moi.

Needless to say, working those three fabulous authors has been a total thrill. Talk about energy and excitement and a terrific exchange of ideas! The hardest part for me was picking the time frame for my heroine to jump back to! Lindsay chose Rome, Cindy the Greeks during the war with Persia, PC ancient Britannia. I wanted something different so I chose – gulp! – China in the 7th century, when it was ruled by the most powerful woman in the world.

My choice might have had something to do with the fact that I was stationed in Taiwan as a young lieutenant. Also that my husband and I were married there. And that we recently took a fabulous trip to Beijing and fell in love with China’s history and people all over again.

But I couldn’t make things easy for Cassandra, my heroine, by having her fit right in. Oh, no! Red-haired Cassie had to go back in time as an Irish seer captured by Vikings and sent to the China as a gift to the superstitious Empress. Escorted, of course, by a tall, broad shouldered warrior determined to act as her ‘protector’ – in this century and in the 7th!

I had great fun with the book, despite all the nasty situations I plunged poor Cassie and Max into. If you enjoyed the book — and the series — let the folks here at Nocturne know so they’ll continue it beyond the initial four books.

And be sure to check out the Time Raiders website at www.timeraidersseries.com. It’s got all kinds of information and news and great contests.

All my best,

Merline
