Gena Showalter: Three books, One Month, One Author.

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter is one busy woman! In a matter of weeks, she welcomed three new stories to the world: a new Lords of the Underworld novel The Darkest Whisper, the eBook exclusive LOTU story The Darkest Prison, and a YA novel from Harlequin Teen called Intertwined. Plus, Gena guest-blogs today at Harlequin’s Paranormal Romance Blog to tell you about all three!

by Gena Showalter, author of The Darkest Prison, The Darkest Whisper and Intertwined

Three books, one month, one author.  Two words: so insane!

As in: I am.

On August 1, The Darkest Prison became available for download.  On August 25th, The Darkest Whisper and Intertwined hit bookstores.

What was I thinking?  Three.  At.  Once.  Excuse me while I fall to the floor, curl into a ball, and cry for my mommy.   Promo?  Signings?  Two things shy hermits writers struggle with.  But then, I remember: there’s still vodka in the bottle this is an exciting time!

Of all my short stories, The Darkest Prison is my favorite.  The Titan god of Strength was once a slave to the Greek goddess of Strength – but now he’s escaped and she’s the slave.  Shiver!  I had the best time writing this book, switching their roles and watching them find pleasure balance.  Fine.  Pleasure.

And The Darkest Whisper has such a special place in my heart.  Gwen, the Harpy heroine, appeared to me in a dream.  All at once, I knew her history, her fears, her hopes, and knew she was the perfect match for Sabin, keeper of the demon of Doubt.   A man who has always placed victory on the battlefield above love.  Watching them interact. . . Seriously.  I’m grinning even now.  As they say, the sparks did indeed fly.  I am still burned.

And, of course, my darling Intertwined.  If mama could have a favorite baby… mama would get in trouble, so mama won’t say anything about favorite babies.  I wrote this book for my family, young and old alike.  To be honest, I have never struggled with a book more, pouring blood, sweat and tears into every word.  But, oh, it was worth it.  Writing about a teenage boy who has four souls trapped inside his head – challenging, yes, but also rewarding.   There’s something so wonderful about reading about firsts.  First loves, that first taste of freedom.  The journey to self-discovery.  Even better – I named the characters after family members, so many of those characters will be growing horns, fangs and tails.

Just sayin’.

ETA: Gena has offered to give away signed copies of The Darkest Night, The Darkest Kiss and The Darkest Pleasure to one winner.  :) Enter by commenting! Why not tell us which is your favorite of Gena’s books? ~Amy

  6. I’ve heard nothing but great things about these books and Gena. Sorry to say I haven’t read any of her books yet, but I hope to soon!

  7. The Darkest Kiss was the first book of Gena’s that I read….and I fell in love by the first paragraph. After that, I’ve been getting all of Gena’s books that I can get my hands on, and I can’t get enough! Gena, you are absolutely amazing, and thank you SO much for the wonderful stories you give us! :)

  8. You are an amazingly busy author and we can’t thank you enough for visiting us today. I recently read Intertwined and it was a very well-done story and got me interested in reading even more YA books.

  9. Gena, you are amazing. I recently read The Darkest Whisper and Intertwined within a few days of each other, and I have to admit that I am going back to read The Darkest Whisper again. Well, after I re-read Enslave Me Sweetly, Seduce the Darkness, and the other 3 LOTU books. Hey, what can I say? You rock, Gena. Keep writing and I can’t wait for more :D

  10. Just got thru reading the first three books in the Alien Huntress series, and am so hooked. Savor Me Slowly was fantastic. Looking forward to starting the Lord of the Underworld series next.

  11. Danielle B

It would have to be a tie bewteen The Darkest Kiss/Night.

I just love the series and I need to get to reading The Darkest Whisper. I’ve heard Nix is in it and I LOVE IAD/Nix!!

  12. While I’d love to already have a favourite, I’m intrigued by the titles. Shouldn’t the winner be someone who hasn’t already read them all? What better way to make a new fan!
    XOXOXO

  13. Gena you are absolutely amazing!! The Darkest Whisper had me hooked from page one! (I couldn’t put it down!) I can’t wait until The Darkest Passion & The Darkest Lie come out.. Gideon & Aeron were adorable in Sabin’s story and I can’t wait to read their own stories! :-)

  14. Oh gosh, I love all of Gena’s books. I guess if I HAD to pick a favorite it would be The Darkest Kiss. I absolutely loved Anya and Lucien’s story…Anya was such a naughty girl!!! But, who could blame her…Lucien is HOTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. That’s our gal!!! She has the best sense of humor and she lovingly shares it with all of us. But I must say, my favorite, besides ALL of the LOTU stories is Seduce the Darkness… and the Vampire’s Bride … and Playing With Fire… awe heck! I love all of Gena’s books.

  16. The Darkest Night is my favorite book Gena’s written. It’s a great series.

  17. I have had her books on my TBR list for a while. But so far the only one i have had the chance to read was Intertwined which I loved.

  18. Angela Smith

I really enjoy your Darkest series. I also read Intetwined. I bought it at Barnes and Noble and read it in one sitting. I also just read Seduce the Darkness. It was pretty good as well. I haven’t read any of that series so I guess I will need to back and read the other ones. Thanks for cranking three out in one month. Keep up the good work.

    Angela

  19. Linda Henderson

I have to admit I haven’t read any of your books yet, but I would love to read them. I really enjoy paranormal books.

  20. I love them all!! My fav of all favs is of course the Darkest Pleasure. Thanks Gena for all the great stories you write! I cant wait for more to come from you!

  21. Hi Gena~

I have Intertwined in my TBR pile and I have loved your Lord of the Underworld series! I would love to be entered in the contest.

    Congrats on all the releases!!

  22. I’ve read everything but Red Handed and Black Listed and I think two of the anthologies you did and I love all of them, but my absolute favorites are Animal Instincts and Catch a Mate. Animal Instincts has got my most favorite kissing scene ever and thats saying alot as I read ALOT! Catch a MAte has the really great pickup lines before each chapter that I found hilarious and the book is just amazing.

As I do own those books, I ask not to be entered into the contest so that others have the opportunity to read a great author. I just wanted to let ya’ll know my fave Gena books.

  23. I’ve read all of the Lord books and I love them all. Couldn’t pick a favorite though. That’s like asking me to choose a favorite chocolate. It’s all good. Looking forward to Paris’s story though.

    Keep on keeping on Gena!

  24. My favorite Lord so far is Reyes. I told my husband, I would be packing my bags if Reyes show up at the door. Love the Lords of the Underworld.

  25. I couldn’t really say which book is my favorite.

I love all Lords of the Underworld, but then there are Valerian and Layel, and I also like the YA novels, and…

But if I really had to chose than (this i so hard) I would say Sabin and his book The Darkest Whisper.

  26. I love all the Gena Showalter books. I admit I haven’t read Intertwined yet but it is on my tbr pile. To pick a favorite of all the Showalter books is extremely hard, they are all so enjoyable. But… I’d have to say it was probably ‘The Vampire’s Bride’. I enjoyed Layel and Delilah so much and their struggle with their growing feelings for the ‘enemy’ were truly enchanting to read. Second best enjoyed was definitely ‘The Darkest Whisper’, though. Doubt was such a interesting demon to read and I totally loved Gwen. And I am so looking forward to Gideon’s story and THAT is no lie. :D Thanks for the opportunity to win signed copies.

  27. I adore Gena’s books–they’re great reads and re-reads, lol. :)

  28. Gena has written some very intriguing books. I haven’t yet read any of her books but they all look fabulous!

  34. I’m about to go and pick up my copy of intertwined. i read the first chapter on Genas web sight and couldn’t wait any longer. i live in Australia so it would have been a long wait.

  35. Hey Gena,
Congratulations on such an amazing accomplishment! I don’t know how you manage to find time to sleep and still release 3 books in one month. I’m a huge fan of your writing, and one of the books I recently re-read and absolutely adored was Catch a Mate. It makes me laugh out loud every time, especially the pee lightbulb..priceless.
    Best wishes!

  36. Way to go Gena. Basically youre amazing with all that you have going on! I love all of your books. However, still gotta find time for Intertwined. Too much to do and not enough time in the day to do it! I’m sure you know what I mean. :) Take Care!

  37. I just want to say thank you for all your wonderful stories and the people in them. You make my life as a women more interesting

  38. Gena you are without a doubt absolutely amazing! You are the only author I know of that continues to not only put out numerous books a year but keep all of your reader fans update on each of them. I truly thank you for this as it really makes me feel a deeper connection to the books I read. Just saying!
The Lords of the Underworld along with Alien Huntress books are my FAV!!!

  39. Diana Marie

Intertwined was an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G book! I cannot wait for Unraveled.
    Congrats on the triple releases!
The Lords of Underworld series is one of my favorite series:)

  40. I’m looking forward to all three of these!

  41. Liz Bradshaw

I’ve read all of the LOTU books and am in Love!!!! I can’t wait for the next one. Not sure who is my fav, but I’m hoping for something to happen good for Torin. He is always there for everyone, always does the right thing, but is utterly alone. Looking forward to see what is going to happen with Aeron. Woo Hoo! Gunna be good stuff!!!

  42. I don’t have a favorite, I have enjoyed them all. I guess if I have to pick I would rather pick a series – The Lords of the Underworld I have enjoyed the most… Ü

  43. Terri Badiuk (Wildwitch)

I can honestly say that the 4 Lords of the Underworld books I own are my favorites. I am looking at buying them in hardcover from Doubleday because I can read these books over and over and over and still cry hehe

Intertwined rocked too. Luckily you can only buy that one in hardcover. One day I hope to get it signed.

Hey Gena…ever heard of West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada? There’s an amusement park, hotel, movie theaters and more inside the mall! While you are here…I can meet you and get my books signed! Great place for a holiday! (hint, hint, hint)

  44. I haven’t read The Darkest series yet but loved your Atlantis series and adore Intertwined so as of this moment my favorite is Intertwined.

  45. love gena showalter’s work and would love a signed copy of any of her work!

  46. Hehehe, thanks for tellin’ us about were to post the right comment. I ca’nt wait for your next book, and now I must go and download The Darkest Prison!

  47. bridget3420

I absolutely loved Seduce The Darkness

  48. blackroze37@yahoo.com

love your sense of humor i cant pick just ONE OF YOur books, every one i read of yours, is wonderful and im happy you are a fast write lol

  49. I thank my book store lady every time I come in for pointing me to your books.( I call her my vocabulary angel.) I picked up Darkest Whisper (red it in three days) and was pleased very much by the doubt – harpy combine. Masterfully done. My fav book? Darkest Pleasure. How can you not love a book with the promise of sinister passion right in the title?

  50. I love all of them equally! Who wouldn’t? All the seductive men like Devyn and Marcus and Sabin! But…I guess my absolute favorite would have to be Seduce the Darkness. Who doesn’t love Devyn?

  51. BEST line EVER!!!!… Darkest Whisper, “I need to end my self-imposed celibacy.Soon.”

  52. I have read & reread all available Lords of the Underworld! Its so hrd to wait for the next one each time. My “sticky note” of release dates sits on the wall next to my computer as I wait to add the next checkmark. Each time is sooo worth the wait. Thank you, Gina, for all you do. keep ‘em comming!!!

  53. hello, i am the owner and opperator of toxic-rose.webs.com. I am an army wife and long time fan of yours! i have almost all of your books and my husband and i love them! I am always looking for the next one to come out so i can read it. I have pics of your books hanging up all around my computer and love the charactors you create. I really understand about writting about charactors you meet in your dreams, thats how i write all the time. It is always intresting to see how the story turns out when you write from your dreams, and totally worth it. Love your work!!

  54. I have to say that the Lords of the Underworld series would be my favorite. I don’t want to pick a favorite among them cause I am still awaiting Torin’s story. I am curious how she will work that one out being that he is possessed by disease. To imagine living so long with no human contact is so sad, I can’t help but to love him. She hinted a bit to his story in Darkest Whisper so I am hoping to see something of it soon.

  55. My favorite books of yours are the ones you are currently writing (no pressure though), because they are the ones I’m most anticipating (still no pressure though). I love your books, and just want more! =) I don’t think you can write anything that I won’t like, so I’ll wait here, patient, yet anxious. Great job, and I appreciate the reads.

  56. Thanks to everyone who has entered. The contest is now closed, Gena has selected the winners, and will announce it tomorrow on the blog!
