by Jodi Lynn Copeland, author of “Hot for Revenge” in What Happens In Vegas… After Dark
Hi everyone, and a big thanks to Harlequin for inviting me to blog with you all today!
As you likely know by now, my latest Harlequin release is the What Happens In Vegas… After Dark anthology. My story, “Hot For Revenge”, is written in the first person and involves Ryan, the brother of the hero from my novella in the first What Happens In Vegas anthology.
Ryan stood out to me as someone I just had to get to know more as I was writing the first novella. It was clear this tall, dark, and dimpled firefighter had a secret going on, and I couldn’t wait to uncover it! Boy, though, I had no idea what it was going to be, or that the heroine from “Hot For Revenge”, was going to be out to see poor Ryan killed for that secret.
The heroine, Deitre, is a succubus, the daughter of a demon, and the best friend of a woman Ryan used to date. Of course, Ryan doesn’t know that. He also doesn’t know that she’s anything but human and a major hottie. Another of Deitre’s good friend’s Karen also doesn’t know that she’s a succubus, but I do think sooner or later she’s bound to find out. Why’s that? Well, you’ll have to check out the free weekly read, Hot and Wild, going on right now at eHarlequin.com to discover that answer. Hot and Wild is a short story featuring Karen and her man, who both have cameos in After Dark.
I hadn’t gotten to write a lot of paranormals the year before I wrote “Hot For Revenge”. I was contracted for a number of contemporary stories, and so I was extra anxious to get moving on it. I had such fun exploring Deitre’s demonic ways, and seeing if maybe there wasn’t an angel hiding out beneath her wings. And apparently it left me on a paranormal kick, as I’ve written a few other paranormal stories since that time.
Right now I am working on a paranormal romantic suspense–my first and lasting love. This one doesn’t happen to be erotic, but I am sure there will be a few sexy scenes along the way. The question is, how sexy should they be? The trend these days seems to be to meld erotic sex scenes with otherwise single title or mainstream plotlines. I have to admit if I want to read hot sex, I pick up an erotic story. If I don’t, I don’t really care to see the scenes get too long or explicit in a mainstream or single title. In fact, I will often skip those scenes to get to the real story.
What about you? Do you like hot sex no matter the genre? Are do you prefer to see the truly explicit stuff left to a book with an erotic branding or label?
~ Jodi

Its like a double edged sword when I miss out on a release from one of my fave authors, but in this case its great because I can then get the new release AND its predecessor.
GREAT! Jodi I LOVE your writing and can’t wait to get into this Vegas anthology. As the commercial says everything that happens in vegas STAYS in vegas.

I’m burned out on historicals, but every once in a while I get sucked in by a good blurb and read one.
I don’t mind explicit stuff in any book, but if sex is the overwhelming topic/theme, I prefer it in a book that’s branded as Erotic. A case where sex has over taken the story in a mainstream novel is Laurell K. Hamilton’s later work. I loved the stories in her earlier work, but wished Anita Blake got more intimate with Jean Claude. Now it’s all sex with anybody and everybody to the detriment of the story.

Hi Jodi,
If the hot stuff flows with the book I’m reading then I’m all for it.
I do love the warning labels on some of the romance books out there. I have to giggle at the label, but then I’m pulled to at least take a peek in the book.:)

Hey Jodi!
Hope you are enjoying the vacation. I do like the hot steamy stuff when I am in the mood to read it. I believe if the storyline warrants, spice it up! The author however does not always need to use the “7 words you can’t say on TV” to bring the spice. For instance, if I am reading a romantic suspense I like it when the author builds the sexual tension between the characters for a few chapters and then “BAM” the bubble bursts, a nice little sexy scene and then on with the storyline.
I agree with Danette about the funny warning labels, Samhain Publishing has some of the most hysterical ones out there and they often do make me want to take a longer look.
Have a great day! Lisa

Yes, I definitely like steaminess in my books. It makes for even more exciting reading no matter the genre.

I hope your having fun and enjoying your vacation. Congrats on your new release also by the way. Sounds like an awesome book.
To answer your question, I like to read the steamy scenes in romance. If there are a lot of steamy scenes, it depends on the skills of the author as to if I skip some scenes or enjoy it enough to read it all the way through. And there are some authors like yourself who write with such talent that I never skip a sentence. Does it matter if its labeled erotic or not? Probably not. A romance book is going to have romance in it. Warning labels are nice but not a must in my opinion.

HHey, Jodi! I, too, hope you’re having a great time on your vacation!
Thanks for taking the time out to blog for us!
As for hot sex in books, I don’t mind it (in fact, I enjoy it!), but in a
mainstream book, I would ‘expect’ only 2 or 3 explicit scenes with a lot of
built-up sexual tension. Not just sex for the sake of putting a sex scene in
the book.
Thanks again and I can’t wait to read the new book!

I tend to read erotic romance more than any other, and love more explicit sex, but it has to have an amazing story to go with it. Any genre works for me, though I probably read less historical romances than any other.

Hi Jodi,
I like hot sex no matter what the genre as long as it is consistent with the rest of the story and doesn’t seem overdone or out of place. For me, the hotter the better!!!!
Just got English Arms and can’t wait to read it
But also have Naughty Bits, What Happens in Vegas, and Dangerous Ties to read. I LOVE my TBR pile
